Joe Satriani was asked by Eddie Trunk to single out the one guitarist from all the guys he’s played with in G3 over the years that surprised him the most with stellar chops, to which he replied:
“I think it might be Uli Jon Roth.
“I learned of Uli kind of late, like post-Scorpions, through one of my students, guitarist named Danny Gill.

“I was just shocked that there was this guy named Uli Jon Roth that played the way that he did.
“I was influenced by Uli’s solo records to get back into using a wah-wah pedal, which ultimately led to ‘Surfing With the Alien.’
“We had Uli on G3 tour back in ’98 I think, and he totally blew me away. Because I didn’t know exactly what he was going to be like as a touring partner
“I knew what his guitar sound was like, which was awesome. His playing was just incredible, but I didn’t know what the stage show was going to be like.

“Night after night, he walked out and played with me and Michael Schenker – he turned out to be such a supreme musician.
“I can’t tell you how many times I tried to fake him out just because I knew he loved it. And he just could play anything that I played, faster, higher, lower, re-interpreted… It was so much fun!”
