If there is a person in the New Orleans heavy metal scene that is truly multi-faceted and prolific, it would have to be Jimmy Bower. With the NOLA scene being one of the prime locations for heavy music with a unique distinction of being a sludge metal hub, Bower himself is behind the founding and formation of two key bands – first, as the drummer of the southern tinged metal band Down, fronted by Philip Anselmo and also as the guitarist and founding member of the famous sludge metal pioneers Eyehategod. Unabashed in his display for music driven by the worship of the riff while still maintaining a connect with the raw belligerence of the harcore punk of yore, Bower was also a part of The Slugs, a precursor to the now acclaimed Crowbar, which he also was a part of for a brief period. In addition to this, he served as a live drummer for Corrosion of Conformity and was also a part of Superjoint Ritual alongside Anselmo, until 2004 when the project was dissolved. Additionally, Bower is also part of the psychedelic blues/southern rock band The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight. 2014 is no doubt an important year for Bower, given that he is releasing both an EP with Down as well as the first Eyehategod full-length in 14 years, an album coming out after having borne a major blow in the form of drummer Joe LaCaze‘s sudden demise in 2013.
Metal Wani’s editor-in-chief Owais Wani (alongside some help from Achintya Venkatesh & Sairaj Kamath for the line of questioning) had an opportunity to interview Jimmy Bower (who is currently on tour, incidentally) and discussed a variety of topics including the nature and stylistic leanings of the new Down and Eyehategod releases, their thematic explorations, the reason behind the extended gap between the Eyehategod full-lengths and his individual approach towards song-writing/composition and recording while in the studio, among other topics.
