FESTIVAL REVIEW: HELLFEST (2015) – An Experience Of A Lifetime For A Metalhead
Sairaj R Kamath
Arguably the biggest, most insane hard rock and heavy metal festival in France, Hellfest delivered once again in 2015, with the genres’ biggies like Slipknot, Judas Priest, Marilyn Manson, Limp Bizkit, Lamb of God, Korn and many more putting up memorable shows in its tenth edition. This fest saw a massive crowd of possibly over a hundred thousand people, but these large numbers were not limited to just the first day, and instead saw the numbers swell up over the course of the three-day hard rock and heavy metal extravaganza.
On Day 1, English extreme metal stalwarts Cradle of Filth delivered a solid set with songs like “At the Gates of Midian” and “Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids” as well the popular “Nymphetamine”, but it was the amazing lighting and décor arrangements on stage that made the difference. All throughout, the crowd really managed to get behind the band and cheer and mosh with intensity. Not to be left out, the iconic Finnish melodic death metal band Children of Bodom upped this intensity with pulsating renditions of their classic songs, opening their set with the crowd-favorite “Are You Dead Yet?”.
Day 2 saw more legendary bands perform, like Obituary, Venom and Mayhem. Obituary with their trademark meaty grooves, and Venom with trademarks of their own (pentagrams and upside-down crosses) proved to be a real treat for almost every metalhead present. Norwegian flags floated around during Mayhem’s set and the modern version of the antichrist himself, Marilyn Manson, performed on the main stage with his usual amazing theatrical stage presence. Smashing beer bottles while exhibiting some new-found maturity on songs from his new album made Marilyn Manson a complete performer, delivering one of his best performances in years. Explosions, lights and everything else that one could think of made it a fitting finale to Day 2 of the festival.
