In a brand new interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson was asked about heavy metal’s “enduring appeal.”
He responded:
“I can speak about what IRON MAIDEN‘s enduring appeal is: we exist in our own world. Our fanbase is a little bit like plywood. It’s formed of lots of layers of different age groups. Every layer sticks to the layer underneath it and doesn’t detach. People come to a show expecting to see people of my age, and they get a whole bunch of kids between fifteen and twenty-eight.
“I don’t want to go onstage and look out at a bunch of crumblies my age. People of my age go along to shows, but you never see them in the mosh pit — mainly they’re standing by the toilet, waiting to get their prostate problem solved.”
“We like seeing rabid kids leaping around. That’s what makes our hearts pump onstage. Our music is still fierce. It’s still in your face.”

Mosh pit…for Maiden hahahaha good one Bruce
Dude you have no idea. The only band that ever had more legendary pits than Iron Maiden was Metallica
TRUE words, got my first broken rib at the 7’th son TOUR concert in Copenhagen in 1988 (14 years old) and only realized it the day after 😀
You’ve never been to a Maiden show. So don’t comment. Every Maiden show there is a mosh pit. I don’t participate but it’s there
Don’t forget Bruce but it’s us crumbles who have been buying your albums from the very beginning
We all get older we all go to concert still if that’s the way you feel stop touring
And how about your “superman” girlfriend? I’m sure she’s spent lots of time waiting hours in line and getting crushed to death in the put huh?
He forgets, it’s those “crumblies” who put him and Iron Maiden on the map in the first place.
Definitely
Hey Bruce
I’m 60 and still come to your Shows and I STILL MOSH.
Sooooooooo
I’m starting to dislike Bruce.
Maybe they should bring back Paul Deanna He probably would love to see us older people at the shows!!!
That’s some loyalty there, thanks Bruce, you never fail to dissapoint
Ummm I’m probably an “Old Crumbly” I’ve been going to Maiden gigs since 1979, yes, I had a problem with my prostate but had it removed, but since when did Iron Maiden have a mosh pit?
All the old crumblies are the ones who have been your loyal fans since the beginning. I understand what you’re saying about wanting a mix of age groups. I think it’s awesome myself. But don’t put down your long time fans!
Bruce failed to mention the depends he wears so he don’t have leave stage every 15 minutes, idiot ? ??
Starting to think Bruce needs to be on the douche list with Lars……
😊👍
You will how ever take there money won’t you Bruce so shut it!!
Remember when metal fans weren’t such thin skinned and precious crybabies? No, me either.
No kidding!! People need to relax a bit.
Lmao. Butthurt boomers unite.
Bruce recognizes his own mortality and looking out to a crowd of
nothing but crusty old geezers would be disheartening to any good
artist who wants to see their work live on.
I’ve never seen a mosh pit and I’ve been to around 40 shows since the late 80’s. Mosh pits are mostly at thrash metal concerts, such as Heathen who I just saw and moshed at last week. The closest Maiden gets to a pit is people jumping in place during Fear of the Dark…
Iron maiden is not “MOSH PIT” type of metal. To me they were just a gateway band that led me to the death metal and other core genres that I like today and I’m 55. I listened to them back in the early to mid 80’s until I discovered bands like Slayer, Kreator, Metallica, Death, etc. and just got harder, heavier, faster and crazier after that but my metal evolution began with them being one of my favs and I just can’t see a mosh pit in their groove or myself at any of their shows, especially after hearing Bruce’s opinion.
There was one last night in Leeds
Saw them at Leeds last night, seen Maiden 38 times, last night was by far the worst, sound, vocals, well off, sad to see all these bands coming to an end…
He’s not wrong. I hate when old people greet me and I don’t recognize them, only to realize they knew me from school, and are younger than me. Then I look in the mirror and remember that I’m now old. Pretty sure this interview was taken out of context. Or maybe he really is a jerk, like the other 99% of the idols of my youth? Either way, I’m not dwelling on it.
He is just saying it is great to see younger people come out and not just older people. Yeah he is a bit blunt but yes he does appreachiate all the money we spend.
