“We played at The Forum in L.A. and we had the same agent set us up. I think Elton John once said that he met him but Elvis didn’t know who he was. [laughs] So he knew that we were selling tickets faster than him and he wanted to know what kind of a phenomenon this was. And when he found out we were into muddy waters and Carl Perkins and him and all that great music, he wanted to meet us.
“He had the top of a hotel oppositely to Forum. It was one of them royal suites you have in America. You don’t have a kingdom in [the US], but by the looks of it something’s going on. And you’ve got this great whole long top floor of the hotel that was just for Elvis.

“So he had this great long suite. And they’re taking the tables out and they filled it with couches. And as we went in there we realized that the room was filling up with women mostly. And there was Elvis’ dad, Vernon. And all of the women looked like Sandra Dee, more or less. Well, fancy that, what a nice gift!
“And when the room was buzzing with anticipation, the door opened and this guy just… I don’t know what the word is. It’s not fashy, it’s not slink… He just grooved his way through the people. His hips were moving as he went. And there we were and we just stood in the circle for about two hours just talking.”
