Swedish newspaper Expressen reports that Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson has passed away at the age of 61.
The source included a statement from the family saying:
“It is with great sadness that we have to announce that one of our biggest and most beloved artists is gone.”
The family confirmed Marie’s “previous illness,” likely referring to the brain tumor Fredriksson battled, as the cause of death.
Marie was diagnosed in 2002 and had undergone surgery to remove the tumor. It left her blind in one eye and with limited hearing.
Roxette was founded as a duo in 1986 by Fredriksson on vocals and keyboards, and Per Gessle on vocals and guitar. Per stated through his social channels:
“Time goes by so quickly. It’s not that long ago we spent days+nights in my tiny apartment sharing impossible dreams. And what a dream we eventually got to share!
“I’m honoured to have met your talent+generosity. All my love goes to you+your family. Things will never be the same.”
