“I didn’t want to become a producer.
“I became a producer out of necessity because the people we were working with, albeit they were talented, they didn’t understand thrash metal.
“You try to tell them that the bass guitar is supposed to sound that way. The bass guitar is supposed to play the same lick that the guitar does.

“So many people just don’t get it. You don’t just hire somebody for what they do and then try to change them, you hire them to do what they do and you let them do it.
“I think it was JFK who said, ‘You’ve got to hire the right people to do the job and be smart enough to let them do it’ – that’s paraphrasing the quote but it’s something along those lines.”
