Dream Theater’s John Petrucci singled out the one guitar effect he’s not a fan of, telling The Captain:
“I don’t like reverb.
“The only application I find where I like reverb is on acoustic.

“I don’t like it on electric. I don’t know why. In fact, my crunch sound – which is the sound I play during 90% of Dream Theater shows – is dry. Totally dry, nothing on it.
“As far as that heavy rhythm goes, I’m coming from the Metallica school, where you want it like as tight [as possible] – you wanna stop on the dime. That’s a [Mesa] Boogie thing, that’s what Boogie does amazingly well.”
Focusing on his rhythm sound, John added:

“I had mentioned Metallica and Maiden, and stuff like that, I always wanted to have a big, crunchy, heavy sound.
“That’s only gotten heavier as music has developed. [My signature] guitar comes in the seven-string [edition], as well. So songs starting from our [1994] album ‘Awake,’ I started using a seven-string.
