In an interview conducted by InJupiter, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted talked about playing in The Chophouse Band and how it compares to metal bands he played in. He offered (via Blabbermouth):

“The primal nature of these songs that we play [with The Chophouse Band] is what makes it all so attractive to me. After being in these loud, earth-shifting bands to stripping back from all the hundreds of thousands of watts of amplifiers and effects, I realized that there are ways to get to the purity of the music quicker. I went to the other end of the spectrum to rediscover myself and learned a new style of playing with the acoustic guitar, and it just feels right to play these songs live. It’s a fun, joyful vehicle to get our ya-ya’s out.”
During the chat, he also remembered what it was like to join Metallica back in the day:

“I got to join my favorite band. I got real, real fucking lucky and got to travel around the world five times. Just imagine being in a dreamlike state for 15 years—that is the only way I could sum up what the experience entailed. Suffice it to say, I had too much fun.”
In 2016, Newsted formed a new outfit called Jason Newsted and the Chophouse Band, which plays songs by Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, and others.
