Black Label Society mastermind Zakk Wylde shared the reason why he would want to play with Pantera after the tragic death of Dimebag Darrell.
Here is what he said:
“When the guys were actually talking about doing a reunion thing – I’m friends with all the guys, but the way I always viewed it is that there is no replacing Dimebag like there’s no Replacing Saint [Randy] Rhoads.
I mean, every night, we [the Ozzy band] were up there and we played ‘Crazy Train,’ ‘Suicide Solution,’ we played ‘Mr. Crowley’ – it was celebrating Randy’s greatness and his legacy. It’s a celebration of how awesome he is.
I always considered it, like, it would be no different than [Hendrix drummer] Mitch Mitchell asking Eric Clapton, ‘Eric, would you go out, we’re gonna go out and celebrate Jimi and we want you to play and sing all of Jimi’s stuff?’.
Eric was good buddies with Jimi, so why would he say no to that? You know, the three of them, there’s no replacing Jimi, it’s Eric up there honoring Jimi’s greatness and his legacy.
That’s the way I always viewed it. If we were ever gonna do that, obviously, you can’t replace Dime just like you can’t replace Randy, they’re unique and super special people, so to me, it would be a massive celebration of Dime and all the mountains that Pantera conquered. That’s the way I always viewed it.”
