Besides any B-sides, Napalm Death has been quite quiet lately. The last full-length album came out in 2015 and now Napalm Death are back with a new EP ‚Logic Ravaged By Brute Force‘. With only two songs, the record is equipped to fit on a 7-inch record. Since the previous full-length album was a blast with almost every song, the songs on this EP are quite experimental for my taste, so they fit perfectly on a separate record.
The song with the same name as the EP „Logic Ravaged By Brute Force“ did not make a bad impression at first. The tom-drumming in the verses adds a nice groove and the chorus stays in the ear. Also, the middle part, which is a bit more calm and playful, fits well into the picture and makes the song complete.
The second song „White Kross“ is in the main riff for my musical taste relatively punk-like, then partly quite melodic in the parts between the vocal parts and towards the end almost doom-like. But also this track has an experimental character from the beginning. Also, this song is coherent in itself and seems well written.
You can think what you want from the songs, but if you want to listen to something other than the “classic” stuff of Napalm Death, you will be happy here. I have to admit, in the beginning, I was not at all convinced of what I heard, but with time the songs got better. But if you are looking for grindcore elements, like I was in the beginning, you would not find them. Also if you are looking for Mark “Barney” Greenway’s gloriously nasty voice, which is a trademark of the band, in my opinion, you would not be happy here either, but it is still really good. After a long time (look on the last full-length album) I would have liked to hear one or the other lively, hard song in „classic“ Napalm Death style.
The sound is very well tuned, so I really have nothing to complain about here. All in all, you can try this record because it is not bad, but quite experimental, which will probably deter purists. But at least it is one thing: A healthy sign of life.
