Recently talking to Kerrang, Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine said that Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield have been trying to ‘smear’ him for 40 years.
Here’s what the guitarist said:
”People don’t know me at all. They think they do, but they only know the guy Lars [Ulrich] and James [Hetfield] have been trying to smear for 40 years.
“They know the guy that usually responds to bad sh*t being said about them, but do they know me? No. I don’t usually come out and say stuff about people unless I’m provoked… especially nowadays.
“In the beginning, if someone said something I didn’t like, I may have retaliated in jest, but never seriously. I would never attack anyone without good reason.”

This story is so funny because Dave Mustaine is such a has been, that every time he wants to come out of the dusty closet of yesterdays bands he always brings up this crap about how his past band mates from Metallica smeared him for years and trashed his fame. But yet I’ve only ever seen one interview in where Metallica was being asked about the trials and tribulations of first forming a band and how they finally settled with the current favored line up they now have. In that interview they only ever said that some of the former guys that tried out with band before they became famous just didn’t seem to jive with the band as a whole. Dave Mustaine just happed to be one of those guys. The only thing they said about Dave was that he came in to the band with a rich kid attitude with all this fancy new stuff and the best of the best equipment thinking he was already a star. Yet they said he with all that expensive equipment that they thought he would be allot better than he claimed to be. They also said he had his own idea of what the band should be and that didn’t sit well with the other band members. Not to mention Dave use to drink too much and not take the band seriously so they let him go. This is what every big band has gone through at their roots. The problem with Dave is that he just can’t understand that he is yesterdays story from over 30 years ago and that Megadeath was never as good as Metallica and virtually faded from the lime light. Except for a few die hard fans No one born in the last 20 to 30 years even knows who Dave Mustaine is. Most people don’t even know who Megadeath is. But Metallica is forever . Even some Millennials listen to Metallica. Metallica is still very famous today. I think that’s why Dave constantly has never excepted that and that’s why he still tries to live off of the the crumbs of Metallica’s fame and success. Metallica hasn’t smeared you for 40 ys they have forgotten you they don’t even mention you mention you. They just don’t care it’s ancient history to them. Get over it Dave your just not that interesting anymore. Stop mentioning Metallica every time you want to wipe the dust away and get your name in the news again. Face it man you just weren’t good enough. Even though you tried to copy them for all these years.
I’m only 14 and I know both bands but I think Megadeth is a way better metal band than Metallica. Metallica dominated through the 80s, especially after Master of Puppets, and in the background was Megadeth making good albums that never got any real attention from the mainstream. 90s rolls around, and Metallica change their style and honestly get washed with their load albums, however Megadeth continues to get better, especially with Rust in Piece and Countdown to Extinction. Sure, Metallica gets all the fame because they sold out first, and honestly that’s nothing to be proud of. So what, you sold more albums and gained more fame. Did you do it using the music style you started out with? Hell no, you had to change your style drastically to get to the top. And yes, Master of Puppets and AJFO were getting them closer and closer to the top, but all the Black Album did was boost them right to the top rather than them getting closer and closer with each thrash album. Megadeth was way better in the 2000s mostly due to Metallica releasing St. Anger, in my opinion the most horrid metal album ever made. Megadeth didn’t even have to make awesome albums to be better at this point. Death Magnetic and Hardwired are good albums and yeah Super Collider was not that good, but Dystopia was incredible, way better than Death Magnetic and Hardwired. In the end, Dave hasn’t had to live off of Metallica’s fame. It’s simple to see: He went out and made one of the best metal bands ever and has since been declared an icon in his own right outside of Metallica. I’ve never used this website before so just in case the site doesn’t show it, this whole comment is in response to Matt’s comment on how Dave lives off Metallica’s fame and Metallica is better.
Look only a few bands in history have really stood the test of time and are still super famous today. Their music is still being played every day at sports events and movies or commercials,
Bands like the Beatles , Elvis, The rolling stones, The WHO, OZZY/Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin ,KISS, Elton John ,Queen, AC/DC to a lesser degree maybe Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden. Some of them are dead yet still being listed too. Many of these bands will still be heard in 50 years from now or even further into the future. And then their is Metallica. They are still huge today and considered mainstream. Metallica will still be played years from now. But Thousands of great bands have been forgotten about but are still playing. The fans of these groups are die hard’s but when this generation dies they will fade into a dusty history and barely remembered. Sorry to say but Megadeath and Dave Mustaine will fall in that category. They kind of already do. I think thats why Dave always brings up his griping about Metallica. He just can’t except the truth. He just wasn’t good enough. He’s jealous really.
