Each of us has one’s own idea of rock music. When the word “rock” is mentioned, someone associates it with classic rock or metal, for some, it’s just AC/DC, Metallica, Scorpions, and for some rock music is something “very loud” and “heavy”. We are used to the fact that rock music is first and foremost a man’s business. But even in this aggressive environment, some female singers perform songs not only with classical vocals but even growling and screaming.
Unfortunately, there is still a stereotype that extreme vocals are not for women, they sound worse, and that girls have no place in metal at all. We will try to convince you of the opposite and draw your attention to several groups with female vocals, among which you will find world-famous performers. If you are not interested, this page will entertain you.
1) Halestorm
Halestorm became one of the most successful hard rock bands with female vocals in the early 21st century. In 2013, the band won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for the single “Love Bites (So Do I)”. Over the years, their sound has expanded to elements of dance music and pop-country. The band currently has a contract with Atlantic Records and four released albums.
2) Nightwish
This is a Finnish symphonic metal band that performs songs in English. Nightwish is one of the first and most influential bands in the symphonic metal genre, along with Therion and Within Temptation. Previously, Nightwish featured a combination of female opera vocals, keyboard-symphonic arrangements, and fast guitar solos. Later, the band moved away from power metal by increasing symphonic arrangements.
3) Evanescence
This is an American rock band with a charming Amy Lee. Evanescence is probably one of the most controversial bands with female vocals: someone loves them madly, someone is not very positive about their work. This did not prevent them from making a bright career, writing dozens of hits, and winning two Grammy Awards. Long breaks in work and creative crises made the fans of the group nervous. Recently, they announced the release of a new single “Better Without You”, from their album “The Bitter Truth”, which was released on March 26.
4) Within Temptation
The Dutch rock band was founded in 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adele and guitarist Robert Westerholt. The musical direction in which the group performs is called symphonic metal, although the early songs, like the album Enter, belonged more to the genre of gothic metal. The musicians themselves describe their work as symphonic rock.
5) Arch Enemy
This is a Swedish band playing in the style of melodic death metal. It was founded in 1996 by brothers Michael and Christopher Amott. Arch Enemy is often called the parents of high-quality Scandinavian metal. Arch Enemy’s first album appeared almost immediately after the band’s founding. The album “Black Earth” was created under a contract with Wrong Again Records, and after its release, Amott did not plan to record songs further, considering the group a one-time project. However, the song “Bury Me An Angel” suddenly became a hit for everyone and won the hearts of millions of Japanese listeners, regularly aired on local MTV.
Except for these incredible bands, there are also such amazing female vocal groups as In This Moment, Lacuna Coil, Guano Apes, Paramore, Infected Rain, and others. What are your favourites among the female vocal bands? Share with us in the comments.
