Faith No More frontman Mike Patton addressed Vince Neil in a new interview.
Mike Patton spoke about his contributions to Dead Cross’s upcoming LP “II”, which included a cheeky lyrical reference to the Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil.
In a new interview with Revolver, Patton was asked how this affected the album’s writing process. Comparing the situation to his experience with Faith No More, Patton replied:
“I don’t know if it affected the way the music was approached, but it definitely affected my approach. I’d been a replacement singer another time, with another band. [Laughs] That was Faith No More, and our first record took off. It was a great success. Then, once I dug my teeth into it on the second record and integrated it better, that’s when we found our collective voice.
“And I would say the same with this band. The first record was like, ‘Here’s the music — go!’ That’s not to say it was a rush job, but this one was a lot more thoughtful and methodical. And it took a lot longer due to the pandemic.”
Apparently, the lyrical content is one of the album’s aspects to which Patton actively contributed. Throughout the record, Patton’s signature weird humor sees him name-dropping a number of fellow musicians, including Billy Joel, Poison Idea guitarist Tom “Pig Champion” Roberts, SNFU vocalist Ken “Chi Pig” Chinn, as well as Vince Neil.
Regarding one particular simile which references the Mötley Crüe frontman, Patton said:
“What did I say again? I forget. Wasn’t I kind of making fun of him? Oh, yeah: ‘Like a Vince Neil who sings too many songs.’ Yeah, like fat, old — we all know where he’s at now. I’m conscious of that, and I also fear that I may become that. [Laughs] So why not talk about it?”

Mr One Hit Wonder is talking trash about a real singer who was in a real popular band.
Real singer….yeah right.
MIKE is the real singer here, and no one hit wonder at all.
Forget about “Easy”
Easy was a good song
It’s not even their song, that belongs to The Commodores 😛
If you measure an artist’s value as the number of chart hits recorded, you can just tell us that you are musically illiterate and cannot think for yourself. It might save some time, Nicole.
Oh man, you are adorable. If only you stopped living in the 80s…. Patton is one of the most prolific musical artist in the world.
Correction: One of the most prolific and underrated singers talking trash about the absolute WORST singer in the history of rock n’ roll.
Thank you! I fully agree.
You say worst rock n roll singer in history and I would that you have obviously never heard David Lee Roth.
Lol. Dave struggles live but on the albums he’s great. And he’s a lyrical savant. Witty, charismatic, funny and intelligent. A great fronan.
You say worst rock n roll singer in history and I would say that you have obviously never heard David Lee Roth.
Truth. Patton is King Vince is Clown.
Mr one hit wonder is known as one of the greatest vocalists alive, and has release no less than 40 albums over the last 30 years. Meanwhile your successful singer has been flogging the small handful of albums from the 80s that were more a product of the industry than talent, and hasn’t released anything good or relevant since the 90s. I mean, you’re a fan… Right? How many times have you found yourself praising Vince’s vocal talent? He was a party boy in a party band, not anyone I would take seriously as a musician
Real musicians don’t care about making “hits,” they care about the quality of their music. Unlike Vince.
Get bent, chucklehead
One hit wonder? Lololol
One of the greatest singers in history with a record setting range and multiple musical projects that are all legendary. He can say whatever the hell he wants.
You should probably dig a little deeper into his career as a vocalist… his vocal talent and contributions far surpass that of Vince Neil. Popularity doesn’t always equal talent
You clearly don’t know Mike Patton’s catalog. I’m embarrassed for you
That one hit wonder has released 32 studio albums, 2 live albums, an EP and 4 soundtrack albums, and he’s one of the most widely respected vocalists out there. Go look up vocal coaches reviewing him on YouTube and tell me who the real singer is.
You clearly have no clue what you are talking about. Mike Patton’s vocal range is word class. Hilarious.
Have you ever heard the entire album of Angel Dust? That record alone crushes Motle Crue’s entire catalog!
Yeah that comment is going to get you a million responses lol. You obviously don’t know Mike Patton and his fans lol.
1 more hit than you.
‘One-hit Wonder’? Patton’s one of the most respected vocalists and composers in the genre over the last 20+ years and has been consistently prolific. Neil sold a lot of records and hasn’t done anything but ruin his and his band’s legacy for the last decade or more. They aren’t even comparable.
If your only metric for good music is popularity, then yeah, Mike Patton’s not your guy.
One hit? Epic, We Care A Lot, Midlife Crisis, Underwater Lover, Out of Nowhere, all hits. But this is all beside the point, as “hits” and radio market financial success does not necessarily equal good music since like the 50s and 60s. This is an artist for the sake of it, and one who is very selective yet prolific, and a true composer in his own right. He started out in a cover band like everyone else, probably covered Livewire hehe. I didn’t really get that he’s actually talking trash about Vince, just describing the fate of aging frontmen, who Vince exemplifies, Axl, he spared him this time lol. Anyway, what this artist has achieved is absolutely amazing and towers far, far above anything a pop glam metal group who was dubbed a thousand times over did in terms of actual merit, not pop radio – although, not far behind on that end, either. How many actual Crue hits were there? Just a few more than FNM, it seems. Alsthough I quit after Shout.
Old fat poser doesn’t even reach Μike Patton’s little finger.
You’re dumb
You’re delusional if you think Patton is a one hit wonder. Try 19 bands and one if the greatest voices in music. Vince is a fat has been who just needs to retire
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣realsinger
Well said Nicole. 100% spot on!
Ha ha ha ha
Mr “One Hit Wonder” actually has more hits than you think. Mr One Hit Wonder constantly puts out quality music whether you pay attention to it or not. Mr One Hit Wonder is known for having the widest vocal range in popular music. Mr One Hit Wonder can still actually sing and perform.
Vince Neil, while I like Crue, has never been a good singer. He just landed the right gig that fit him.
Hahahahaha. ‘One hit wonder’? FNM had multiple hits, lol. Two of them topped the charts in Australia. They had five albums that reached #1 here. Mike Patton can out-sing Vince any day of the week. Theres not a single youtube video making fun of Patton’s vocal shite, there are plenty making fun of Vince. What a ridiculous comment. Patton’s still out there making music and touring. Vince Neil can’t even finish a song and needs a tired old Crue to tour… and STILL cant deliver!
Taking pot shots at a way more successful frontmam, I get it very forthcoming considering he never achieved that level of success, but doesn’t mean he’s wrong.
Mr One Hit Wonder?? Apparently you solely depended on that trusty radio for your musical advice and never realized that Mike Patton has roughly 9 or so different bands of his own, countless side projects and collabs…has never needed hits because his musical GENIUS far exceeds the mental capacity of any commercial rock band. Period. Epic…. The one hit wonder was an MTV thing way more than it was a FNM thing. FNM moved on to put out 6 amazing albums with countless hits for the fans to adore. All the while Patton grew and progressed musically and created new bands and music and guess what??? His fans grew up and progressed right along with him!! At least those that were musically enlightened enough to seek out music further than the front seat of our cars ?????
Motley Crue is a great band, Vince Neil has just never been a great vocalist. I have seen the Crue at least 20 times in my life spanning from 1984 up to 2016? Loved them everytime but the audience has ALWAYS done Vince’s job for him. It’s ok. I love you just the same Vince. He just is not and never will be Mike Patton. Check out Mondo Cane. If you think Patton has no talent…. How many people with no talent can sing opera in Italian? Yeah, that’s Mr. Mike Patton You want it all but you can’t have it…. Do not ever compare someone like Vince Neil to someone like Mike Patton without having enough ammo in your belt to back up an enemy attack. Both great musicians but a singer and a musician are two different animals all together. A vocalist in one band compared to a musician that writes, produces, composes, plays, sings, arranges, records with not one but 9 of his own and works with countless others has zero comparison factor. Sorry. Not sorry. ??
Preach Brother!!
Mama firefly is 100% spot on.
Vince Neil is a Washed-out drunk who murdered an awesome drummer!!!
love it!
Vince has bigger problems than being called out by an Icon. Mick Mars has been fired, his own health is worrisome to say the least, and his once decent band is now a joke. A life of hard partying rarely ends well. He’s still a person, he’s had a hard life, maybe we can remember that when tearing him down.
Mick Mars has a disease. Has nothing to do with hard partying. Just saying. Also the band members were chosen in the beginning with looks being a major key factor not just being able to play said instrument and Mick was actually (fact check me please) a weak point in the band, he’s really not that great a guitarist. They wanted to replace him but couldn’t once the wheels were turning already. Now, him being fired and stuff does suck and I like his contributions to the band and he’s my favorite member (ultimate sleaze LA look and sound.) Don’t always have to be the best to record music but the above is true..
Motley Crue was never a good band…they actually were posers!! Throw a pentagram on your cover then next album your “Smoking in the Boys Room.”
Motley Crue had only one goal, sell music for money to get high….look at them now.
30 years of work and 40 albums with 9 bands, and the author has to use “Faith No More” because Google thinks the guy sells Honda cars. I get that there is an irrelevant niche who like this guy, but Vince Neil was one of the artists to define a cultural era. These guys shouldn’t be in an article together anywhere.
What a fat slob
Damn hope he wasn’t talking smack about Pig ;(
