Sammy Hagar’s son, Andrew, recently spoke to Metal Edge, revealing an interesting encounter with David Lee Roth upon discovering their familial connection. Andrew shared his perspective on the situation, expressing that although Roth is a talented frontman, he didn’t particularly warm up to him after learning about their relationship. However, Andrew didn’t take it personally, recognizing that Roth’s behavior didn’t reflect on him.
Andrew said:
“And David Lee Roth is a great frontman. We had an encounter on the Sammy and Dave tour that made me think, ‘Oh, maybe personally, I don’t really care for this guy.’
”He wasn’t the nicest guy on earth to me once he found out that I was Sammy’s kid. But that’s okay. That’s not saying anything about me.
In the same interview, Andrew also discussed the reaction he received from fans of David Lee Roth when he was younger and how it has persisted to this day. Andrew faced harassment from individuals who were fervent supporters of Roth. Interestingly, after his father’s departure from Van Halen, some of these fans began to shift their attitudes towards him. It’s a peculiar situation that Andrew continues to experience, as he still receives messages criticizing and chastising him for simply being Sammy Hagar’s son.
“My dad always taught me how to stand up to bullies, but I definitely was harassed by some kids who were more David Lee Roth fans. And then, when the band broke up with my dad in it, then they were coming back around.
”I don’t know; it’s just a weird thing. I still, to this day, because of the Van Halen breakup, get people in my DMs that are chastising or criticizing me for being the son of Sammy Hagar.”
Andrew also reflected on the media’s portrayal of the Van Halen breakup. He expressed frustration with the fact that many people judge him solely based on his association with his father and the negative portrayal of the breakup in the media. The details surrounding the split remain ambiguous, with conflicting narratives depending on the media outlet. This misinformation has contributed to the ongoing criticism Andrew faces.
“They know nothing about me other than that I’m just his kid, and they hate me because of what he did to Van Halen or the way that the media portrayed the breakup. I mean, there are still so many people out there that will never be able to tell you whether he was kicked out or left the band. And depending on what media outlet you’re reading, it falls on either side of that.”
