James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich have always had a deep connection that allows them to be vulnerable with each other. Lars recognized this early on and knew they would complement each other perfectly. In an interview with Classic Rock, the drummer shared their journey from the beginning, stating:
“Right from the start, I sensed that we were a perfect match. I believed that I could help James overcome his shyness and bring out the best in him. He, in turn, compensated for some of my limitations. It was a harmonious balance, a yin and yang dynamic. I felt it strongly from the very beginning.”
Despite James Hetfield’s public image, Lars has had the privilege of witnessing every facet of his personality and has seen a side that others may not be aware of. Lars expressed:
“People might have a certain perception of James, but he is actually a much softer and more vulnerable person than they realize. I have always perceived him as a gentle soul and a loving individual.”
An example of their close bond was evident just last year when James became emotional on stage while discussing his insecurities about aging and his guitar-playing skills during a performance in Brazil. His bandmates immediately embraced him, offering support and comfort. Reflecting on that moment in an interview with Revolver in April, Lars shared:
“Hugging our bandmates is something we genuinely cherish. We openly express our love and appreciation for one another, grateful that even after more than 40 years, we can still stumble together and make it happen. We have become very comfortable with this aspect of our relationship.”
