In a detailed conversation with Guitar Interactive Magazine, Wolfgang Van Halen set the record straight regarding rumors about his uncle, Alex Van Halen, potentially being involved in Mammoth WVH’s highly anticipated second album. After playfully hinting at Alex’s unseen contribution, Wolfgang affirmed that his uncle had not participated in the album.
When questioned about the truth behind the speculations, Wolfgang responded:
“Not really. One thing I did for fun was with the song ‘I’m Alright.’ While writing it, I was experimenting with different takes and got a bit bored with the wah operation for the solo.”
However, he disclosed an unexpected collaborator in the album’s creation process, stating:
“I had my uncle Patrick, a crucial part of the Mammoth team, in the studio, and I had him handle it. On the album, you’ll see the back cover stating, ‘All songs recorded and performed by Wolfgang Van Halen, except for wah operation on solo of ‘I’m Alright’ by Patrick Bertinelli.’ It started as a funny joke, but it actually delayed the album cover approval process by one day because we had to sign a Work for Hire agreement and pay him $1.”
Despite Alex Van Halen’s absence from the album, his influence on Wolfgang’s musical journey remains significant. In a 2022 interview with the Aquarian Weekly, Wolfgang discussed the role his uncle plays in his career.
When explaining his Grammy nomination, Wolfgang shared:
“My team, which I call the trusted humans, consists of myself, my manager, my uncle, and my business partner. We form the brain trust when it comes to decision-making for the band.”
