In a conversation with Guitar Interactive, Roger Waters’ touring member, Dave Kilminster, talked about Waters’ wish to find someone like David Gilmour.
About the audition experience for Roger Waters, Kilminster said:
“So, I went for the audition and performed terribly. It was just hideous. I thought I was prepared, but I clearly wasn’t prepared because I didn’t know even about the history of music. They said they wanted someone to play and sing like David Gilmour. […]
“So we were just about to play ‘Money,’ and I was feeling quite comfortable because I had all the three parts.
”So, I went to Roger and said, ‘What part would you want me to do? I can do the reggae or just fill in the bassline or do the thing with the drummer.’”
