In a recent discussion with Matt Pinfield on 955KLOS, Ann Wilson opened up about the late Chris Cornell, offering reflections on his profound sensitivity and the challenges he faced in navigating the world.
Wilson, associated with classic and arena rock through her band Heart, shared a close connection with the grunge movement, particularly with Cornell. Recounting her friendship with Chris, she described him as a complex and beautiful person, noting his sensitivity that may have made the world too overwhelming for him:
“Chris was a really complex and beautiful person – probably a little too sensitive to live in this world for that long. I just remember him being – at different times that I knew him – seeming very big and powerful and strong physically, and then at other times when he was more depressed, he would seem a lot smaller. He would just fill his physical being, or not. He was so smart, so intelligent. And cynical, sarcastic – ooh, such a biting wit.”
Delving into the grunge movement, Wilson underscored Seattle’s unique position in the music world, emphasizing its remoteness and how it often gets overlooked in major tour itineraries, reflecting the self-possessed nature of Seattleites.
Reflecting on Cornell’s death, Wilson mentioned in a 2022 interview that it was a poignant closure, acknowledging the shock and deep impact of losing someone who, despite hints of unhappiness, was not expected to leave so suddenly.

I was very happy to hear someone so talented as Ann Wilson describe Chris as so sensitive. I remember when Chris inducted Heart into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His introduction was beautiful. I wish others in the Rock musical world would talk more about Chris and his legacy. I miss Chris so much.
I am in awe over Ann’s description because. Let’s be honest. In society men are supposed to be strong and emotionless. I loved Chris’s soft side and the fact he was incredibly talented and sweet and was brave enough to show it.
RIP Chris
