Rikki Rockett expressed discomfort with individuals criticizing bands that incorporate political views into their lyrics.
In recent posts on X, the drummer responded to haters while making it clear that Poison was never a political band:
“Poison has never been a political rock band, but many bands have been and are since the 60’s. Why do people get all riled about that sh*t?”
Acknowledging the historical connection between certain music genres, particularly punk, and political themes, Rockett emphasized that some bands owe their existence to political engagement. In another post, he highlighted the intertwining of social and musical elements in punk, citing bands like The Clash and The Sex Pistols as examples:
“Punk was clearly as much of a social movement as a musical one. The Clash, The Sex Pistols would never be without politics. Poison grew out of the industrial region of PA. We wanted fun and so we wrote about it.”
