We all know the Megadeth-Metallica feud which lasted for years, but now, everything is at peace between the two bands, thus, bassist David Ellefson mentioned that the thrash scene was largely built upon Metallica’s success.
In a conversation with Deep Riff, host Skull sat down with former Megadeth members, David Ellefson and Chris Poland, where they discussed the competitiveness between Metallica and Megadeth, and how it felt for the fans. Moreover, the bassist said that all the former Megadeth members were actually fans of Metallica. Here’s what Ellefson said during the conversation:
“We were all Metallica fans, right? Me and Chris, we’d listen to ”Master of Puppets”, and ”Ride the Lightning”. We’d point out the things we liked, and, obviously, some things we wouldn’t have done. For us, at least for three of us, it was not a divided camp.
“I was always a big Metallica fan, and a fan of how they ran their business, the impact of their songs… So, for us, I don’t think that division was there. And quite honestly, a lot of it, I think, was just sort of this anticipation of, ‘Okay, what’s Mustaine’s new band going to be like? How are they going to keep up?
“Because that scene, that movement (was) led by Metallica, clearly. It was the next wave, and it was something that we got sucked into the tailwind of Metallica’s success. They were just like a freight train, and it was great…
”You know, (when) there’s a scene, there’s a handful of early tastemakers that make the scene happen. And we were definitely one of them.”
