On Thursday night, January 30, surviving members of NIRVANA – Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear – made a surprise appearance at the FireAid benefit concert, performing some of the band’s iconic tracks. Filling in for the late Kurt Cobain, who tragically passed away nearly 31 years ago, were a lineup of guest vocalists: St. Vincent, Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, and Dave Grohl’s own daughter, 18-year-old Violet Grohl.
The impromptu performance, which took place at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, kicked off with St. Vincent delivering a powerful rendition of “Breed” from NIRVANA’s celebrated Nevermind album. Kim Gordon followed with a heartfelt take on “School,” a song from the band’s 1989 debut, Bleach. Joan Jett then joined the stage for “Territorial Pissings” – another track from Nevermind. Finally, Violet Grohl stepped in for “All Apologies” from NIRVANA’s final studio album, In Utero.
It’s worth noting that St. Vincent, Jett, and Gordon — along with Lorde — had previously taken the lead as guest vocalists during a partial NIRVANA reunion in 2014 when the band was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
