Iron Maiden guitarist Dave Murray recently shared insights into his role within the legendary heavy metal band during an interview with Louder Sound.
“The leadership comes from Steve [Harris], Bruce [Dickinson], and Rod [Smallwood, the manager],” Murray explained. “I’m more like a team player, and I’m happy to be in that position.”
He went on to joke about his laid-back nature, adding, “You couldn’t have a whole band with people as laid-back as me, or else nothing would get done.”
As Iron Maiden nears their 50th anniversary, the band continues to celebrate the enduring dynamic that has shaped their legacy as one of metal’s most influential acts.
While Murray remains humble about his position, his role in shaping Iron Maiden’s iconic sound cannot be overlooked. Steve Harris has long recognized Murray’s musical talent, as highlighted in biographical accounts. “When the others made it plain that it was either them or Dave Murray, there was no choice. There was no way I was gonna let Dave go. Not only was he a nice bloke, he was just the best guitarist I’d ever worked with. He still is,” Harris shared.
