In a recent interview on The Chuck Shute Podcast, SKID ROW drummer Rob Hammersmith shared insights into the band’s ongoing search for a new lead singer following Erik Grönwall’s departure. Grönwall, who became the band’s fourth frontman after Sebastian Bach, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in March 2021. As a result, he is immunocompromised, which made it difficult for him to tour.
Reflecting on the current state of the band’s search for a replacement, Rob explained (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “We’ve been really active in this search, kind of on the prowl, since last year. We’ve had some really strong candidates, and we’ve had discussions with several talented individuals. We’ve even spent time in a room with a few people, and the experience has been great. That said, we’re still actively looking. We want to keep this process in the public eye and remind people that we are still on the hunt. So, if anyone out there feels like they’re the right fit, it’s still an ongoing search. We’ve made significant progress, and it’s amazing to see how many talented people are out there. Whether or not they’re the perfect match for us doesn’t really matter — it’s just inspiring.”
When asked if the band is seeking someone stylistically similar to their previous vocalists, like Bach, or someone who could take SKID ROW in a new direction, Rob responded: “We’re open to either possibility. We’re fully aware of the legacy we’re carrying, and we’re grateful for the fans who are deeply attached to that history. It’s a wonderful situation to be in. Preserving and honoring that history is important to us, but at the same time, we’re not opposed to evolving, just like all of our favorite bands did over the years. We’re open to both directions, but honoring the band’s history is key.”
Rob also spoke about the range of vocalists they’ve considered during the search: “We’ve looked at a mix of both established vocalists and relatively unknown talent. We’re not limiting ourselves to any specific type of candidate.”
Returning to the qualities SKID ROW is seeking in a new singer, Rob said: “This is a very specific gig. We’re not claiming to be THE BEATLES or saying our music is the most complex out there, but it’s a very specific role. When you factor in the history of the band, you’re dealing with a catalog that many fans hold sacred. So, finding the right balance between honoring that legacy and allowing room for evolution is key. It’s a balancing act, but we’ve had some amazing singers come through who would bring something truly unique to the table. It’s a very specific gig, and we’re figuring it out as we go.”
