In a recent interview with WNST and Baltimore Positive founder Nestor Aparicio, legendary TRIUMPH guitarist and vocalist Rik Emmett was asked about the possibility of performing again at Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis, Maryland. Reflecting on his past performances, Emmett shared (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “You know what? Of all the places I’ve played, Rams Head was always one of my favorites. I loved the venue, the atmosphere — it was just a great place to perform. There are even videos on YouTube of some moments from there, and I still have a Rams Head t-shirt tucked away somewhere.”
However, Emmett quickly shifted tone when discussing the current state of U.S.-Canada relations and the political climate, particularly under the leadership of U.S. President Donald Trump. “Honestly, and I don’t want to end on a down note, but with all the B.S. happening between the U.S. and Canada, and the guy you elected as president…” he said, referring to Trump.
Aparicio, wearing a red “Canada” visor hat, jokingly pointed out that he wasn’t one of the 77 million Americans who voted for Trump. He also expressed concern about how he might be received if he tried to cross the border into Canada. In response, Emmett laughed and advised, “Wear that hat, buddy — just make sure you’re wearing that hat. Because there are people who are walking around, like Mike Myers on ‘Saturday Night Live’ with his ‘elbows up’ rallying cry, like [hockey legend] Gordie Howe. We’re going to be a little more defensive now.”
Emmett didn’t hold back when discussing his views on American politics, stating, “The Republicans in your country are offensive people, and they’re being offensive to the rest of the world. I love the fact that there are Americans who don’t agree with that, but yes, we’re going to be defensive.” He also mentioned the tensions that may arise during sports events, saying, “When the [Baltimore] Orioles play the Toronto Blue Jays, they might hear some boos during the national anthem.”
He went on to clarify, “It’s not that I don’t love what America stands for. The best part of my career happened because of the incredible support from Americans. They’re still my largest fan base. But whatever happened to the America of Lady Liberty? The America that had an open heart and open arms? That’s gone now, and it’s something we all should regret.”
Concluding on a lighter note, Emmett said, “So, if someone’s got their elbows up, just go, ‘Okay, I’m sorry.’ Wear a little maple leaf over your heart, and you’ll be fine!” He laughed, ending the conversation with a smile.
