Former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley made a bold and honest statement about his guitar playing style during a February 19 interview last year on Shout It Out Loudcast.
“I am a sloppy guitar player,” Frehley admitted. “So is [Led Zeppelin’s] Jimmy Page. So is [The Rolling Stones’] Keith Richards.”
He went on to double down on his opinion, naming some of rock’s most iconic guitarists.
“Jimmy Page is a sloppy guitar player. So am I. Keith Richards is sloppy,” he continued. “Sometimes they’ll have an off night, and Keith is off in the ozone.”
Despite his self-criticism, Frehley also noted that his performances with KISS were usually sharp.
“I wasn’t always on, but most of the time when I played with KISS, I was on,” he explained. “I’d save the partying for after the show.”
Frehley’s comments offer rare candor in an industry often focused on perfection. His transparency highlights both his rock ‘n’ roll roots and a deeper sense of self-awareness.
Today, Ace Frehley is still going strong in the music world. He continues to tour and showcase the same raw, energetic guitar style that made him a legend.
