Legends of 1990s pop culture, Beavis and Butt-Head will be returning to our screens once again in the summer. The know-it-all slackers have made a comeback a couple of times now, being rebooted in 2011 and 2022, but now, for the first time, Beavis and Butt-Head will be coming to Comedy Central.
Arriving on July 10, this will be the third season of the most recent reboot, following on from the two that were exclusively available on Paramount+. Seemingly as a response to the good feedback and viewership, it’ll now be coming to the fully-fledged TV channel.
Given their cultural impact over the years and the status of some of the duo’s most legendary moments, their return couldn’t be better timed. They mean something different to the many factions of fans, but among their greatest skits were when they were watching the music videos of metal bands.
Static Characters with Enduring Appeal
One of the best moves made in rebooting Beavis and Butt-Head was keeping them as the same static characters. Their opinions and traits don’t change with the times. Instead, the times change around them, and they apply their same kind of witty, sarcastic commentary to everything. Their personalities and sense of humor remain the same.
Even through a reboot, then, this means that they’re the same beings that we know and love, enabling us to turn to them for their classic takes. A big part of what made them so reliable is that they were on MTV – the then-hub of pop culture.
They’d lambast and be a part of the MTV lifestyle all at once, which was perfect as a satirical take on the increasingly media-craving landscape. Since, media consumption has only accelerated and become more prevalent, going from TV obsession to screens and new media being the focus of our attention.
While they could seem dated for their attitudes, it’s their consistency that makes them relevant across all media. This is why you’ll see their official products still around, like with their presence among the online slot games. The Beavis and Butt-Head slot is all-in on replicating the show’s experience. This includes the visuals, comments thrown out by the characters, and retro aesthetic. It’s very much a for-the-fans game that shows their continued appeal.
A Critical Eye for Metal Music
They may not have offered the most nuanced view of the music video fad of the 1990s on MTV, but Beavis and Butt-Head were certainly accurate with their satirical remarks more often than not. One of their most famous critiques came with the This Love music video by Pantera, who’re teasing the release of new music this year.
With just over a minute of the music video to dig into, the two theorize the origins of the anger of the frontman, which was a little dark for here. They also came back for more with the release of I’m Broken, raging along at full volume. However, it was with Megadeth’s Symphony of Destruction that offered the iconic visuals of the two going all-out banging their heads.
Hopefully, the return of Beavis and Butt-Head in the summer of 2025 with be accompanied by them, once again, offering up their views on the modern scene of metal and metal music videos.
