Josh Freese is no longer the drummer for the Foo Fighters, just two years after stepping in to fill the massive void left by the late Taylor Hawkins. Freese announced the unexpected news via Instagram, revealing that he was informed earlier this week that the band had chosen “to go in a different direction.”
In his candid statement, Freese shared that he wasn’t given a reason for the decision. He later added a dose of humor, writing: “Stay tuned for my ‘Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the FOO FIGHTERS’ list.”
Freese’s full message reads:
“The FOO FIGHTERS called me Monday night to let me know they’ve decided ‘to go in a different direction with their drummer.’ No reason was given. 🙁
“Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band.
“In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band, so while I’m not angry just a bit shocked and disappointed. But as most of you know I’ve always worked freelance and bounced between bands so, I’m fine.
“Stay tuned for my ‘Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the FOO FIGHTERS’ list.”
Freese joined the Foo Fighters in 2023 following a heartfelt global search for a drummer who could honor Hawkins’ legacy. Known for his work with bands like Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, and Devo, Freese brought decades of experience and a dynamic live energy to the Foo Fighters’ world tour.
Despite the abrupt nature of the split, Freese emphasized that he’s not bitter and continues to support the band’s direction. The Foo Fighters have not yet issued a public statement regarding the lineup change or who might be replacing Freese behind the kit.
Fans and musicians alike are now left wondering what’s next — both for Josh Freese and for the future of the Foo Fighters’ rhythm section.
