In a candid new interview with Rolling Stone, rock legend Sammy Hagar opened up about the possibility of reuniting on stage with former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth — but made it clear that certain conditions must be met.
Reflecting on their past collaborations, Hagar didn’t hold back when discussing the challenges he faced while touring with Roth. When asked about the idea of hitting the road together again, Hagar pointed to long-standing issues that would need to be resolved first.
“The circumstances would have to be right. Dave always wants too much. He always tries to upstage,” Hagar said.
The duo previously toured together on the infamous “Sam and Dave” tour — a run that was often marked by internal tension and logistical issues. Hagar recalled several incidents that strained their professional relationship.
“He tried to pull stuff on the Sam and Dave tour. The nights when he was opening, when we flip-flopped… which I would never do again. I would never bother,” Hagar explained. “But look, I’m not an opening act for anybody. On those nights, he would call in and say that the bus broke down, 10 minutes before he was supposed to go on. And because I care about my fans, I would go on. And I did that about four times. I wanted to break the guy’s f*ckin’ neck.”
Hagar didn’t stop there. He also criticized Roth’s stage performance and setlist choices, suggesting that Roth failed to evolve his act beyond his Van Halen days.
“The stupidest thing is, he did the worst when he headlined. He couldn’t follow me with a band of kids playing Eddie’s guitar solo note for note and playing Eruption and sh*t. He did his whole Van Halen show from 1983, and I’m going, ‘What an idiot!’ He should have represented himself a little more like who he was as a solo artist.”
Despite their shared history in Van Halen, it’s clear Hagar feels any potential reunion would require a new level of professionalism from Roth. Whether that collaboration ever happens remains to be seen — but the tension between the two iconic frontmen is very much alive.
