As the music world continues to reel from the death of Ozzy Osbourne, heavy metal titans Metallica have released a heartfelt tribute, remembering him not just as a musical legend, but as a mentor and lifelong friend.
Ozzy passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at age 76. Within hours, Metallica shared an emotional message on their official Instagram page, reflecting on his unmatched influence on their band and the entire heavy metal genre.
“It’s impossible to put into words what Ozzy Osbourne has meant to Metallica. Hero, icon, pioneer, inspiration, mentor, and, most of all, friend are a few that come to mind.”
“Ozzy and Sharon believed in us and transformed our lives and careers. He taught us how to play in the big leagues while at the same time being warm, welcoming, engaging, and all around brilliant.”
The tribute wasn’t just emotional — it was personal. Metallica owes part of their early success to Ozzy, who gave the band one of their first big breaks. In 1986, during the Ultimate Sin Tour, Ozzy took Metallica on the road as his supporting act, introducing their thrash metal sound to massive mainstream audiences.
This gesture of faith and friendship helped launch Metallica into the spotlight, and the band has never forgotten it.
“We are heartbroken and devastated by this loss and send our love and condolences to Sharon and their family, bandmates, and his very large circle of friends,” the band added. “He left an incredible legacy and will be sorely missed.”
Just 17 days before Ozzy’s passing, Metallica participated in the “Back to the Beginning” concert, a final farewell performance for Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath. During the show, Metallica paid their respects on stage by performing heavy renditions of “Hole in the Sky” and “Johnny Blade”, two deep cuts from Sabbath’s legendary catalog.
Fans and critics alike called the performance “explosive” and “emotionally charged”, with Metallica clearly honoring Ozzy as one of their greatest influences.
With decades of friendship, shared stages, and mutual respect between them, Metallica’s tribute serves as a powerful reminder of Ozzy Osbourne’s impact—not just on fans, but on the very artists who carried the metal torch forward.
Ozzy gave Metallica a chance. In return, they gave him the kind of tribute only true disciples could offer.
