Fans of the legendary heavy metal band Raven received concerning news this week after frontman and bassist John Gallagher was hospitalized with a serious health condition.
The band, best known as pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement, announced that Gallagher had been admitted to the hospital after suffering a subdural hematoma, a bleed on the brain.
The news was shared directly with fans via the group’s social channels, where they explained the situation and assured everyone that John is now in recovery, though live performances must be postponed.
The Official Statement
The band affectionately refers to its fans as “Raven Lunatics.” In their official announcement, they addressed supporters with honesty and gratitude.
Transcribed Statement by Raven:
“RAVEN LUNATICS, GOT SOME UNFORTUNATE NEWS FOR YOU!
We are very sad to say that we have to postpone the upcoming European Tour due to John’s health.
He was admitted to hospital with a massive headache on August 12th.
Following a CAT scan, it was determined that he was suffering from a bleed on the brain, Subdural Hematoma.
Surgery was planned for the next day, then a further, more invasive surgery was performed on the 19th.
He is now doing good, but of course, needs to recuperate and will not be able to fly on a plane.
Very few shows have ever been cancelled in our 50 year career.
EDIT: We are working with our agency Dragon Productions, as well as the promoters to reschedule these dates.
We would like to thank our booking agent Bart Gabriel, the promoters and of course all the Raven Lunatics who were coming to the shows for your understanding.
We will be BACK – STRONGER than ever! Rock Until You Drop!
John, Mark and Mike”
What Happened to John Gallagher?
According to the band’s statement, Gallagher was hospitalized on August 12 after suffering from a sudden and severe headache. Following medical examinations, including a CAT scan, doctors discovered he was experiencing a subdural hematoma.
A subdural hematoma occurs when blood collects between the brain and its outer covering (the dura). This condition often requires urgent medical treatment, including surgery, which Gallagher underwent not once but twice.
The more invasive procedure on August 19 was performed to stabilize his condition. Thankfully, the statement confirmed that he is now “doing good” and on the path to recovery.
Impact on Raven’s European Tour
The hospitalization means that Raven’s European tour has been postponed. While the band expressed regret over the delay, they emphasized that Gallagher’s health must come first.
With a career spanning more than five decades, Raven is known for its relentless touring schedule. The band noted that very few shows have ever been canceled in their history, making this postponement a rare event.
They reassured fans that they are already working with Dragon Productions and local promoters to reschedule the affected dates, promising a strong return once Gallagher is fully healed.
Fans and Community Response
Since the announcement, messages of support have poured in from Raven Lunatics worldwide. Fans have expressed relief that Gallagher is on the road to recovery, while also praising the band for their transparency.
The heavy metal community is known for rallying behind its artists in difficult times, and Gallagher’s situation is no exception. Many fans have taken to social media to share personal stories of how Raven’s music has inspired them and to wish him a speedy recovery.
