RUSH frontman Geddy Lee has opened up about the band’s recent decision to bring in Anika Nilles as the new drummer — marking the group’s first major lineup change since the passing of Neil Peart in 2020.
Speaking with CBC News, Lee detailed how the band discovered Nilles, her background, and the careful process that led to her selection as Peart’s successor.
How RUSH Found Anika Nilles
According to Geddy Lee, Anika Nilles was introduced to the band by a member of Rush’s road crew. Known for her work with Jeff Beck and her acclaimed solo drumming career, Nilles quickly caught the band’s attention.
“When we made the decision to see what it’s like to play with another drummer, we contacted her, and she’s just a fantastic person,” Lee said. “She came to Canada and we very surreptitiously snuck into a studio and worked out for about a week. By the end of it, we were convinced that this would be a go for us.”
The private studio sessions reportedly took place in Canada, where Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson tested how Nilles’ drumming style would mesh with their intricate sound.
A Daunting Task: Learning RUSH’s Complex Catalog
Lee admitted that the transition wasn’t easy — especially since Nilles didn’t grow up as a RUSH fan and had to learn the band’s uniquely complex arrangements from scratch.
“When she first came over here, we started playing some of the songs, trying to translate RUSH music to someone who didn’t really grow up as a RUSH fan,” Lee explained. “She was not a Rush fan. So it was a bit of a daunting task. We had to go through each song and explain the nuances of the song and the idiosyncratic nature of how our songs are put together.”
Despite the challenge, Lee said the process brought new energy to the studio and helped the band reconnect with its roots in a fresh way.
Lee Praises Nilles’ Work Ethic and Spirit
Geddy Lee went on to praise Anika Nilles for her dedication, positivity, and technical skill — qualities that have helped rejuvenate the legendary band as they navigate a new era.
“She’s an incredibly hard worker. She’s got great technical facility and she’s just got a really positive attitude, and that’s really good for Alex and I to be around right now,” Lee concluded.
Lee’s comments reflect both optimism and respect for the late Neil Peart’s legacy, emphasizing that Nilles’ arrival represents not a replacement but a continuation of Rush’s enduring musical spirit.
What’s Next for RUSH
While there’s been no official announcement of new music or tour plans, Lee and Alex Lifeson have hinted at returning to live performance in some form. The addition of Anika Nilles could mark the beginning of a new chapter for RUSH, one that honors Peart’s influence while exploring new creative ground.
Fans worldwide have expressed enthusiasm and curiosity about the band’s direction with Nilles behind the kit — a promising sign for what might come next.
