Journey guitarist Neal Schon has confirmed that longtime keyboardist Jonathan Cain has announced his farewell to the band. Schon broke the news himself in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), addressing Cain’s exit and reaffirming his dedication to Journey’s future.
“Jonathan Cain announced his farewell to Journey tonight,” Schon wrote. “I’m nowhere near done! Journey has so much more life ahead!”
Schon ended his post with optimism, adding, “I’m sure we will have a great tour!”
The announcement marks a significant moment in the band’s history, as both Schon and Cain have been pivotal creative forces behind Journey for decades. While no official statement has yet been released by Cain or the band’s management, Schon’s message appears to confirm a major lineup change.
Cain, who joined Journey in 1980 after replacing original keyboardist Gregg Rolie, was instrumental in shaping the band’s signature melodic rock sound. He co-wrote many of Journey’s most iconic hits, including “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Faithfully,” and “Open Arms,” helping define the group’s chart-topping success throughout the 1980s.
Schon and Cain’s professional relationship has faced well-documented tensions in recent years, with public disagreements occasionally surfacing online. Despite the challenges, the duo continued to tour together and maintain Journey’s legacy as one of rock’s most enduring acts.
With Cain’s reported departure, Schon’s statement suggests that Journey plans to press forward with new energy and possibly a fresh lineup. As fans await official confirmation from Cain, Schon’s declaration makes one thing clear — the guitarist isn’t ready to slow down.
