DEATH ANGEL were one of the heralding second-wave Bay Area thrash metal bands alongside the likes of equally seminal giants such as Testament, Vio-Lence and Forbidden. The band had hardly hit puberty when they made their torrential entrance into the Bay Area thrash scene, and what a feat to achieve for a band that young given the scene was practically swarmed with innovative bands that were immensely fresh in their approach apropos their twisted and aggression-laden musical musings. Yet, they weren’t merely a novelty due to the mere ages of the band members, but instead had something genuine to contribute amidst the several innovators that were active in their local scene. Their debut, ‘The Ultra Violence’ is nothing short of a classic, and is right up there with the all too well known thrash metal essential listens, and continues to serve as inspiration for legions of younger thrashers to this day. The band was dissolved after a bus accident (among several other problems) put Death Angel to rest in 1991. The band made their return a decade later, and their last studio album, ‘The Dream Calls for Blood’ is a testament to the solidification and cohesiveness of their signature sound.
