As I am trying to gather my thoughts from May 9th at The Vic Theatre which is one of Chicago’s oldest and iconic venues to see such an astounding line up, Devin Townsend Project, Gojira, and Opeth… this is a show I know better not to miss. On a Tuesday evening at sold out show in Chicago, every one was pumped to see the three bands. When I got my gear ready, I know it’s show time.
When I arrived into the venue, no doubt it was already packed. I’ve listened to some of the conversations by fellow metalheads saying how excited they are for this night to come.
First up, we have Devin Townsend Project who was added support for Gojira and Opeth on this tour. As soon as the clock hit 7:30pm, Devin Townsend immediately pumped the crowd with his unique uplifting vocals, starting off with “Rejoice”. Those who were not familiar with them were blown away. As I was too! I definitely need to check them out more since I am not very familiar with their music.
French metal band Gojira were up next. They were nominated for two Grammy nominations last year. People started chanting. They started with “Only Pain” off from their latest album, ‘Magma’. Mario came out first and started killing it with the drums. The intensity of this band grew immediately, and they were very animated. People were moshing, head banging and singing to every word to their songs. I was not sure if I was going to be mentally prepared for them because being a long time fan of Gojira and seeing them for the first time was a phenomenal experience.
Ending the night, we have Swedish legends, Opeth. They played a mixture of old and new songs. Each of their songs is a mix of smooth to harsh vocals. Mikeal was very interactive with the fans. He mentioned visiting a record store and finding a Christian vinyl for $25.00. The fans boo’d then he went on and said he found a vinyl for Coven and every one cheered. During the middle of the set, people started moshing and getting so into it. What captivated me most was when they performed “In My Time Of Need”. As soon as that song started, every thing and every one around me was invisible.
Overall, I really enjoyed this show. It was my first time seeing all three bands. The lights, sounds, and production were perfect and stunning. The bands delivered so much energy and had an intense stage presence. This is not a tour line-up to miss.
