“The pain in the back and the stiff neck is the sign that we had one hell of a night”
Imagine this, I come back home from a concert with an aching back and a stiff neck from all the head banging. At the gig I up a few beer pints, sing so loud I lose my voice and totally forget that eating is something that humans do. When I come back home, I need two things; something to eat and a muscle relaxant spay. Doesn’t it sound like I had a great night? Well apparently not to most people. I have spent a good amount of the last few years of my life explaining to people around me, my dad my friends in college that for us ‘metalheads’ the pain in the back and the stiff neck is the sign that we had one hell of a night.
Are you a metalhead? Have people repeaedly mistaken you for being an angry, aggressive weirdo, when you are just a simple person, maybe usually mellower than most people around you are? Have people judged you and stayed away from you because you wear black band t-shirts, ripped jeans and flip- flops or combat boots. Your favorite accessory is your headphones and you always have an ‘in depth thought’ expression on your face, which indicates you are a metal head? Did you deep down always feel that when it comes to being a person, you, a metal head win in so many ways? Ask me? I think the world needs metal heads and let me tell you why.

Metalheads have forever been known to be the violent aggressive people. Why? Well because head banging and mosh pitting is indeed a sign of aggression and on the outside people think that’s all metalheads do. Stereotypical thoughts is what I’d call it. Well, let me tell you, this is not the kind of thoughts metalheads ever have. Even as metalheads we agree that mosh, pitting is aggressive and looks absolutely violent. Not just that we always love things like ‘Wall of death’, which might be one of the most enjoyable things we do. However, it’s only human to feel rage, anger and aggression and we chose to stay human, act human and release our aggression with passion in the mosh pit to music that reaches us, affects us and touches us. Yes, it may seem like the most aggressive and nonconformist form of music, but that’s only because metal musicians and followers let their aggression out in their music and do not do it any other way. So much that metal heads outside the convert venue might be one of the most peaceful people around; they form a very loving community. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, a metalhead is a metalhead.
One of my most favorite things about metalheads is that they have a great sense of community. Walk into a room and see a person wearing a band t-shirt from a band you know of, you hear and feel this instant click. However shy a metalhead may be, he or she will end up in a passionate discussion with you as soon as they know you are a metalhead. Next thing you know, you are arm in arm head banging at a metal concert in town. Once you befriend a metalhead, he or she is always family, it’s a small community but a very strong brotherhood.
Metalheads always live by passion and love, most often, you see that over shadows their aggression when you get to know them and interact with them. They like negative music but are the most positive and fun loving people you will ever meet. Most often very intelligent as well. Also, ignoring the stereotypical thoughts on metal about it being all about hate, metal talks about real emotion, which may include emotions that are more negative, folk, culture, current affairs and issues. True metal isn’t all happy and shiny, it’s more realistic and thus metalheads accept who they are and are very realistic and levelheaded people. Delusions have no place for us, metalheads.
In a world where things get complicated and life is full of chaos, metalheads know their place and they stand there. Metalheads are forever level headed barring when they are in the moshpit. They are people who don’t get into petty issues, the ones who know what is important and what can be ignored. Metal heads are honest people, they have fun when it’s time to have fun, and they understand situations and react accordingly. True a metalhead might be a very angry person, but it takes a lot of effort and provoking to reach the point where they can’t contain it anymore. If all the people in the world were so level, the world would obviously, undoubtedly be a better place.

Metalheads are not the usual kind of people, not the ones that everyone can relate to, but that’s because they don’t want to be that way. Metal heads are unique and they prefer to maintain that stature. They don’t believe in living a life where everyone fakes a personality and money makes everyone go blind. Metalheads realize there is a lot more to life than just alternative personalities.
“They may think we are crass, but all we do, is kick ass”
We metalheads are in your face, we live our life with passion and honesty, the world does deserve people like us. We’d rather rock than die. Next time someone looks at you weirdly because of the way you dress or look, stay assured you have contributed to the world more than they ever will.
I think I should conclude everything I wrote by coming to the point. Apart from all the things that we are, metal heads are awesome and the world could totally do with some awesomeness every now and then.
