Devin Townsend talked prog stuff, explaining to uDiscover Music:
“I never liked prog. But if it ultimately allows me to sustain myself financially – to be called prog – I’m totally down to it.
“I loved Motorhead. The first song I ever learned was ‘Motorhead’ by Motorhead.
“But because I didn’t get laid when I was in high school, I learned how to do sweep arpeggios, and I think that’s now how come I’m on a prog stage, because on some level i have facility to do articulate arpeggios.
“I think that also goes back to neurosis of it all. It’s all tied to my inability to pee, and it’s not my prostate.
“I think think that prog music is really hard to… But it’s interesting that prog as a genre is starting to incorporate things that aren’t…
“Its definition is like, ‘Is Not Katy Perry’ more than anything else. So I’ll take it. Because before it was [more complicated]. But now it’s just like, “OK, you’ve got more than one verse.”
