Jessie David from Metal Wani had a chance to talk with Paul Mazurkiewicz, the drummer for Cannibal Corpse.
They discussed the upcoming album ‘Red Before Black’ the making of the album, Paul’s favoruite tracks, and what makes it stand out. Paul also discussed the writing process, how some of the tracks even come off as being catchier than normal especially for Cannibal Corpse and how the album has a thrash element to it. When asked what to expect Paul said “more of the song writing has an overall thrashy vibe, but very aggressive, brutal and precise”. When asked about drummers, Paul went on to name drop Dave Lombardo, he goes into detail about how the former Slayer drummer inspired him.
Paul also chats about going back to Mana Studios working with Erik Rutan and why they chose to work closer to home for the album. Which may have helped form a more aggressive and raw sound to the overall album. The album art cover is less gruesome, and Paul touched base on why they wanted something different but also the thinking behind the art work.
Sticking to Cannibal Corpse’s roots is important but Paul talking about maintains the bands roots while growing, and how hes become a better drummer over time. Paul said “As long as we maintain that mentality the music can only get better.” They’ve been ripping for 30 years and in Paul’s words they’re “Aging like a fine wine”. Overall Paul Mazurkiewicz is excited for the new album and said that ‘Reb Before Black’ combines the sounds of all other Cannibal Corpse albums making it the best of all Cannibal.
Cannibal Corpse will be going on tour after the release of ‘Red Before Black’ on November 3rd.
