Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl was recently asked by PBS about the role his music plays “in the politically divided society under President Donald Trump.” He replied:

“You know, the great thing about my job is that when I go out onstage, I get to bring all these people together for three hours.
“They might come from different backgrounds, different religions, different sides of the aisle, whatever it is, but I can go out and sing a song like ‘My Hero,’ or ‘Everlong,’ or ‘Best of You,’ and everyone will sing along. They might be singing it for different reasons, but they’re singing it together.
“That’s what I love about my job. I might have my own opinions politically, and every once in a while in a rage, I’ll let them come out. They are in the lyrics of the songs, but it’s not often that I’ll just go and spell it out for everybody. ‘This song is about that, this line is about that.’ Because I feel like leaving it up to other people’s interpretations is important.
“That being said, we’re not Rage Against the Machine. For the next three hours, my intention is to go out and have everybody forget about all of that and sing our songs with us.

“Music can do that, that’s one of the things I love so much about it. It’s hard to get people to come together like that, but put a rock band onstage where everybody knows the songs, and everybody forgets about that other shit.”
