Alice in Chains singer William DuVall is releasing his first-ever solo album, ‘One Alone’ which arrives on October 4th. Metal Wani’s Jessie David had a chance to discuss the upcoming album, the writing and thought process, upcoming tours and future plans with Alice in Chains.
‘One Alone’ is an all-acoustic album, “one guitar, one voice” as William puts it. It highlights his softer side, but still showcases his vocal range. This is the first album William, has ever done with his own name. After doing years of heavy rock albums he wanted to do an acoustic album saying it was time for a change. The idea is that an acoustic guitar has always played a role in a lot of music he’s been a part of, and he wanted to go back to the roots. Stating again, “one guitar, one voice, One Alone.”
When asked about the album, William said. “It kinda serves as a pallet cleanser to the last 25 plus years of rock records, and it also gives me a good starting point to build from for the future. This is great input, and the starting point at the same time.”
William went into the studio with the track “Till the Light Guides Me Home’ thinking it was going to be a demo. But after it came out so well he decided to lay down a few more tunes. 7 tracks later in one day he was on the way to making an album. William said that he’s always worked like that, going into the studio and leaving with a bunch of tracks.
It was everyday life that inspired William to write the album. He said that personal experience and the wider world were his inspiration, “were all still dealing with the same basic experience and it’s always a heck of a thing. Just life inspired One Alone.”
Hopefully, this will not be his first and only solo album, as William says he wants this to be a stepping stone and does plan on releasing more solo material in the future.
Currently, William is on tour with Alice in Chains. They released their sixth studio album “Rainer Fog” last year. As of now, they are not working on a follow-up album. When asked if they would ever do an all-acoustic album William said “maybe.”
