David Lee Roth has responded to his former bandmate Alex Van Halen with a new video.
Recently, Alex Van Halen has made several critical remarks about Roth during interviews. In retaliation, Roth shared a video of himself dancing to the upbeat Van Halen track, “Dance The Night Away.”
This marks Roth’s first dancing video in five months.
The release comes in the wake of Alex discussing Roth’s departure from the band. He stated, “Me, Ed, and Dave were very subversive in the way we looked at music and the political system and the way we looked at people in general… The band was dysfunctional. It was completely running on three wheels, if you will. I think Ed was quoted as saying ‘but we always played well,’ and that was ultimately what kept it together until it was no longer together. It was a very sad moment when that whole thing fell apart.”
Alex further elaborated on their dynamic in his memoir, Brothers, revealing the intricacies of Roth’s relationship with the Van Halen brothers and the reasons behind Roth’s official exit after the success of “Jump.” He noted, “He couldn’t handle the fact that Eddie was getting more attention than he was. He kept asking Eddie to play fewer guitar solos. Dave was convinced he was going to be a movie star.”
As a result, the version of the band Alex refers to as “the real Van Halen” disintegrated, despite the album topping Billboard’s charts. Alex lamented this moment, describing it as “the most disappointing thing I’d experienced in my life, the thing that seemed the most wasteful and unjust.”
While Roth hasn’t directly addressed the drummer’s remarks, his recent video serves as a playful yet pointed response.
