If there’s one thing that rockstars are known for, it’s going against the social grain. Aside from being something that they express through their music, this mindset is also something they often manifest through their fashion. 

In particular, many musical rock icons, like Ozzy Osbourne and Johnny Monaco, have done so through their use of glasses. Studies into prescription glasses have found that most respondents worried that wearing them made them look older and unfashionable. For rockstars, though, glasses have become not only a practical tool but also one that allows them to step on stage confidently with the swagger that endears them to their fanbases.

Although they may not always be open about it, ocular issues are typical, even among rockstars. As aging happens, these concerns can become even more common. To be specific, it’s normal for adults over the age of 40 to develop presbyopia. This condition is usually treated using reading glasses. As illustrated by retailer Readers, these specs come with a variety of magnified lenses, which can even cater to those with bifocal or multifocal needs. Some years back, Jon Bon Jovi was also spotted wearing what looked to be such specs during a Good Morning America interview, during which he was reading off a screen. With this in mind, it makes sense that older rock musicians, especially, would be drawn to eyeglasses. After all, clear vision is required in order to perform most musical tasks, from reading sheet music to navigating stages.

For comfort

Eyeglasses are typically some of the easiest corrective devices to use. This makes them ideal for busy musicians who may not always have the time to fuss with more delicate optical solutions. A perfect example of this is the late John Lennon, who was known to wear contact lenses initially. However, after these kept popping out, he eventually swapped them for his trademark specs. Understandably, this made for a more comfortable option, which allowed the musician to focus on his craft. The same consideration also influences many other stars. 

For practicality

Finally, eyeglasses are also equipped with more secure designs. For instance, the performance brand Oakley is known for its line of glasses that come with latches for a secure fit and nose and ear pads that prevent slipping. Rock musicians are usually some of the most physically involved performers. For instance, Black Sabbath is known for its crazy stage antics, like running around on stage, jumping into the crowd, and even participating in some controversial gimmicks involving wildlife. This is all despite the fact that a number of their members wear glasses, including Tommy Iommi. Late last year, the band announced that they were planning to come back together for one last reunion show. Aside from featuring their greatest hits, fans can expect their signature eyewear to make appearances, too.
