Rock icon Glenn Hughes has announced that his upcoming album, Chosen, set to release on September 5, might mark the end of his solo career. The statement came during an emotional interview with Louder Sound, where Hughes opened up about the personal nature and creative weight of making solo records.
“This May Be the Last Glenn Hughes Solo Album”
Known for his work with Deep Purple, Black Country Communion, and a sprawling solo catalog, Hughes reflected on the emotional cost of crafting deeply personal music.
“This may be the last Glenn Hughes solo album,” he said. “It was suggested that I needed to do one for the label, I owed them an album. So I thought, ‘OK, if that’s the way it’s going to be’, and I wrapped my head around it.”
Why Hughes May Be Closing the Chapter on Solo Work
Hughes further elaborated on how he approaches solo projects—and why they can be emotionally taxing:
“Solo albums, for me, are very personal,” he explained. “I like to make records when I have something to say. I don’t think about genres any more, I just think, ‘How is this going to sit with me?’”
“If I’ve got something else to say, then I’ll let you know, but I don’t know if I will have,” he continued. “I’m not going to retire, but making a solo album tears me up. They’re so personal, they just do a number on me.”
A Legendary Career Reaching a Milestone
While Hughes emphasized he’s not retiring, he made it clear that Chosen may be the culmination of his solo storytelling—though he didn’t rule out future projects completely.
“I can’t make plans,” he said. “If I make plans, God goes, ‘No way, pal, we’re not going to do that.’ If Chosen is the last album I make, it’s an epic way to finish. But then again, you never know with me.”
