When considering Dream Theater, there’s a certain air of majesty and sophistication that accompanies them. Longevity in music has certainly become a lot harder to achieve in recent years. Love it or loathe it, the modern era has certainly presented new challenges to many a band, so it is testament to Dream Theater that they’re still plying their trade. They may have once been called Majesty, but they’re every bit as majestic as their original moniker would suggest.
Gearing up for the upcoming Australian tour, Metal Wani’s Daniel Jaramillo had a chat to Dream Theater keyboardist Jorden Rudess.
He discusses Dream Theater’s 25th Anniversary tour of “Images and Words”, significance the album has in the history of heavy metal by inspiring so many bands, the response from fans to the album at live shows, having longevity as a band and the challenges that technology and a fast changing world brings.

Jordan talks about how ‘the spirit of melody & emotion in the music’ has kept Dream Theater alive for decades, whether young people have an appetite for progressive and complex music, whether the band would consider doing another anniversary tour for “Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes from a Memory” and if he’s had the chance to see Mike Portnoy’s Shattered Fortress live or even collaborate with him on stage.
He also throws light on the musical direction of the next Dream Theater album, how he re-creates the songs from “The Astonishing” album live without the orchestration, If there are any new technological innovations he is currently working and what new sounds we can expect from new Dream Theater music, on whether there are any new keyboardists that have impressed him and his message to Australian fans.
