In a recent interview with Rock Music History, Andy Curran discussed the possibility of a Rush reunion featuring Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson. The band had disbanded after the passing of drummer Neil Peart nearly three years ago, and the two remaining members seem to be enjoying their semi-retirement. Lee is currently working on a memoir and TV project, while Lifeson spends his time golfing. However, with recent rumors of a reunion, the host asked Curran, a longtime friend and collaborator of the band, about the likelihood of new Rush projects or a tour.
Despite the duo’s busy schedules, Curran expressed optimism about the possibility of a reunion. He mentioned how he hoped Lee and Lifeson would get together, as he is a passionate Rush fan. However, he also acknowledged that even if a reunion were to happen, it would not be anytime soon.
Curran noted that the approaching 50th anniversary of the band’s formation could be a potential occasion for a reunion. He confidently bet that Lee and Lifeson could team up next year to celebrate their legacy. So, if you’re a Rush fan looking for something to look forward to, keep an eye out for possible 50th-anniversary celebrations.
Rush has been an iconic rock band for five decades, and their music continues to inspire generations of fans. Despite Peart’s untimely death, the band’s influence remains, and their loyal followers eagerly anticipate any news of a potential reunion. Lee and Lifeson have been taking their time to pursue their individual interests, but the possibility of a reunion remains a topic of discussion in the music world.
The band’s legacy has left an indelible mark on the rock genre, with their unique sound and technical proficiency. Rush’s music continues to resonate with fans worldwide, and a reunion would be a dream come true for many. While a reunion may not be on the immediate horizon, the potential for a 50th-anniversary celebration gives hope to fans who are eager to see Lee and Lifeson together again on stage.
He said:
“I know that, Geddy… Listen, I’m going to answer in two ways. I’m going to say, I hope they do [reunite] as a Rush fan. I hope those boys do because I see that there’s a lot of race left in both of those horses. Those guys are extremely creative guys… I would be shocked if they didn’t do something together; that’s maybe the hopeful side of me.
But I do know that Geddy is spending a lot of time and has just announced the release of his book, his memoirs; he’s got a TV show that he’s working on. Alex is an avid golfer, and I think that the boys are enjoying the time away from that very sort of ‘write-tour-record-tour, rinse and repeat.’

It could be done, and I would like to see David Grohl be the man behind the drum kit. I’m sure he’d love to do it, and it wouldd have to be someone near and dear to the band’s heart, which we all know David and the Foo Fighters are all close friends. Only seems liek the logical choice.
Let me know. I’m there.
Danny Carey!
No way… it should be Mike Portnoy…he was close with Neil and Grohl could never play Neil’s drum parts…you need a prog drummer
Portnoy is a great drummer and would be able to play Niel’s parts
Yes!!!!
I Completely agree …Mike Portnoy is the Man who could do a good job …the rest mentioned do not even come close …No disrespect to the rest
It would be great to see a reunion. There’s a hot new rock/jazz drummer in the music industry, Grayson Nekrutman. He would be a perfect fit
No chance! It will be Mike Portnoy. He might be one of the only men alive who can recreate Neil’s drum lines. Grohl can’t handle it. Touring again makes no sense unless it’s about honouring Neil’s legacy!
That would be EPIC!
drummer/singer Cody Bowles of Crown Lands should be that guy, if Rush reunite
As a drummer, Dave doesn’t have the chops..
I love growl and belive he’s a good drummer. Unfortunately, it would take a drummer better than Grohl to perform rush songs.
The ONLY drummer who could come close to filling Neil’s shoes is Mike Portnoy.
Danny Carey from Tool Fame no question
I was just thinking the exact same thing!
Please no…they need a performer, for me the perfect match would be Simon Philips.
that would be such a great thing to add onto his career… drummer for the Who’s 25th anniversary tour and drummer for Rush’s 50th?!?!
Dave is a completely different style drummer. I’m Dave would agree he is not the guy to for this job.
As long as it isnt Chad Smith. He didn’t even have Neil in his own top 10
50th anniversary of the debut release. But yeah, who wouldn’t dig a tour? No new music needed. Hire Mike Portnoy on drums.
I miss Rush a lot. They were and always will be the best. But Rush WAS Alex, Geddy and Neil. If Geddy and Alex wanted to write some new music, put out an album, and tour go for it!! I will buy it and see a tour!! But hit the road under a different name. Play some Rush songs, of course, but not a “Rush” tour. Neil was the greatest drummer to have ever walked on earth.
Agreed Daniel! I have no interest in seeing any billing as Rush without Neil. And I’m confident Al and Ged would never do that anyway✌🏼.
i have seen several cover bands for Pink Floyd , Fleetwood Mac … and even true bands with barely one original member ..
the music is The Legacy .
Neal will be missed but as a profesor , he would love to see who learned something from his long life performing .
i want RuSh music . and happy to see the other 2 move on . No New MUsic .
have done enough
Britt Floyd by far the greatest tribute band Pink Floyd has. They do the whole
Stage show as well
Would definitely love to see them perform a 50th anniversary tour that would be awesome and they could have Alex Van Halen drum for them
Please no, let that legacy stay as it was. I do miss them though.
The 50th anniversary of Neil being in the band not the formation of the band. So please get your facts straight
50th Anniversary of the first album!
I truly appreciate your friendship and I deeply care about you and I hope and pray for you my friend for Life!… :))Smiley
Having been to my first gig in Hammersmith Apollo in the 70,s and they finished on my birthday on the last gig !!!! I would love to see a mini tour or more.
It will never be the same without Neil but not should it be. It could be a celebration of Neil and the tracks they loved playing most as a threesome.
Let’s hope eh.
That would be an amazing gift to us die hard Rush devotees…
I’m already having R50 dreams!
My wife and I have been rabid Rush fans since we were in high school together, back in 1976. Been to every tour since, as well with the exception of 1981-82 when I was stationed in Iceland during my Navy years!
I think this is an awesome idea. To fill the drum parts they could chose from the countless amount of drummers that would line up for the chance to do this. It would be fitting seeing Neil influenced so many drummers…it would be the ultimate tribute to 40 years of great music.
They could tour and use footage of Neil on a screen behind them. I’m sure that they have plenty of video of the professor that they could do a full set. I would go.
It would be a shame if they did not get together to celebrate it would be like letting the memories of Neil just fade away. Like all their time together just meant nothing. They are like friends and family and you never forget a family member and you still celebrate the memories you had with the family member. And if they don’t take the opportunity to do it now they may never get another chance or opportunity. For where two or more are gathered in my name there I am with them.
Gods of North American Rock and Roll. We can only hope that they would grace us with new compositions. – C. H.
Ain’t gonna happen….they have repeatedly told us that Rush is over without Neil
While I would not like to see them as Rush as I believe that name died with Neil, but as a play of the name maybe, No Rush. Or something witty Neil would have approved of, but to play as RUSH again would be an insult to the professor as it would have been for either Geddy or Alex. The 3 of them were Rush, there is no substitute.
Definitely a 50th Reunion is in order but, who’s the drummer? And where and how many cities will they perform?
Please reunite! It will be awesome!! Love love you ❤️
I feel like I have nothing to look forward to in my life since NEIL PEART passed. It’s a horrible feeling. Oh, I hope…..
As a Toronto boy and growing up listening to Rush Max Webster etc it would be awesome to see a reunion BUT who could fill Neil’s shoes…most of the greats are passed or not able to play anymore…some one mentioned Dave Grohl, maybe…Bill Ward from Sabbath is another possibility… Shannon from Godsmack possibility also…other than those 3 I can’t think of anyone who could come clise
Love to see/ hear it they could even use a drummer from the big smoke larnel lewis top drummer
Marco Minnemann would be perfect for future RUSH projects.
Obviously the band will never be the same without Neil. However, I could see some sort of a reunion, maybe something unplugged? I do miss the guys.
Rush is the tripod of history and there’s to much dignity in the two remaining to do anything with the Rush logo and totally agree the Rush legacy will transcend with it already written history !
It would be amazing to see them tour. They could invite guest drummers to rotate like the Foo’s did for Taylor’s memorial
They should do a massive Peart tribute concert, with a host of top-tier drummers filling in for the Professor. Also, Patty Pershayla HAS to do the lead vocals—no one else comes close when it comes to Geddy’s early Rush “Banshee Wail.”
not a full tour…..1 show, with multiple drummers, that would be cool !!!!…and they could live stream, and sell a package disc set for it…
I rather see mike portnoy
There is a good chance of a possible reunion performance, but not as RUSH. As a testament to the fact that there is not one drummer that will suffice, and as a tribute worthy of Neil, I believe the only recourse would be to utilize a multitude of his apprentices playing simultaneously on multiple drum kits.
I think if they wanted a 50 year show that would be pretty cool, but I’d vote Stewart C – if they’d get along.
Black Mirror-stylish…with Neil still on drums, holografische would be like time is standing still ☆
Weighing in on the prospective drummer debate. I’ve seen Danny Carey play YYZ with Geddy and Alex at the Taylor Hawking benefit and I’ve seen Mike Portnoy play with YYNOT at the Bubba Bash Benefit for Neil. (BTW, if you don’t know who YYNOT is, you’re missing out). I consider both equally qualified to fill the seat and delight fans. That’s my objective view. My subjective view gives the edge to Portnoy solely because of the relationship he had with Neil. But Neil is sadly gone, so I think the other piece of important criteria is the chemistry that Danny or Mike has with Alex & Geddy. Especially Geddy and selected drummer. It’s the rhythm section after all. Be it Carey, Portnoy, or a TBD drummer, I just hope it happens and that it feels right to Alex & Geddy. Setting my wild desire to see something happen aside, it should only happen if it feels right to the remaining members who are both on record as saying that “it” could never be replicated.
I’ll play drums.
Gavin Harrison and no other
I was lucky enough to see every tour but 1 since A Farewell To Kings tour in 1978. I actually got that tour book autographed. Would love to see a reunion tour.
They should be less worried about the drummer and more worried about Geddys voice and Alex’s arthritis.
I really hope so, get someone good and go for it… I was in the 35th anniversary in Frankfurt and it was Epic!
Mark Zonder !!!
3 choix possibles: Simon Phillips, Terry Bossio, Mike Portnoy. Le meilleur choix reste Neil Peart en vidéo.derrière
How about the Drummer from Primus (Tim Alexander)
I really don’t think they will do a show as Rush again, they may do something together but Rush doesn’t exist without all three of them together. I would like to see them together playing again and enjoying themselves doing whatever makes them happy, I believe their touring days are in the past but a one off that is put on blue ray would be wonderful to me.
an acoustic tribute to RUSH, I have been a fan of them for nearly 45 years, and the first time I heard a few of their songs live and acoustic, (while Neil took a short break) I was simply floored, and I have chosen a couple for my service when that time comes. such as RESIST.. I think it would be a fitting tribute to ALL, and in a sort of “missing man” style fly over.. a short tour possibly.. or invite a few fellow drummers to partake and honor Neil with a solo or two at points. I don’t know just a thought.
I think Portnoy is a great choice but I also would love to see Carl Palmer do it. They could do both Rush and ELP, remember their friends, they are all close in age and Palmer could handle the parts.
Bring it on!! So long overdue!! Will be very emotional and give us Rush fans much needed closure!!!!
What about Stewart Copeland or Terry Bozzio? I think both amazing!!
Geddy Alex Neil 👍🏼
