Vivian Campbell, guitarist for Def Leppard, has provided a hopeful update on his ongoing battle with cancer, now in its 12th year. Although he recently missed a show due to surgery, Campbell’s message to fans is one of optimism as he continues to recover.
On January 20, during a recent Def Leppard performance, the band’s frontman Joe Elliott informed the crowd that Campbell was undergoing “some treatment for his cancer,” leading to Phil Collen’s guitar tech, John Zocco, filling in for the guitarist.
Campbell later took to social media to express his gratitude for the ongoing support from his fans. “Thank you for all the recent messages and support,” he wrote. “As you all may know, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma several years ago. I recently had a bone marrow transplant as part of my treatment plan, and it’s safe to say that thus far it’s been a very successful transplant!”
The guitarist remained upbeat, adding: “I just have to keep my head down and my spirits up for the next 100 days of primary recovery.” He signed off the post with: “A very happy Viv!”
If his recovery progresses as expected, Campbell is likely to be back on stage by the end of April, just in time for Def Leppard’s highly anticipated tour, which is set to kick off in Puerto Rico on May 15.
